DIY Make your own fabric stiffener
Update: Please forgive the bad picture. This was one of my very first posts back in 2010 when I first started blogging and I knew nothing about it. I didn’t want to delete it entirely because awesome readers like yourself are still enjoying the recipe to this day because it works just fine :)
How to make your own fabric stiffener
What you will need:
*White Glue (dries Clear)
I love this Glue
Aleene’s Tacky Glue you could get it at Walmart
*Bowl
*Measuring Spoon
*Water
*Extra bottle to keep leftover- Store in a cool place
Place your White Glue into the bowl. Then add equal amount or less water to your glue..this depends on how thick(stiff) you would like your stiffener to be. Mix well. and that’s it!! Simple, cheap and it works.
I have only tried this recipe on regular (not too thick) fabric. When The fabric was dried I was even able to use a paper punch and cut out pretty shapes with it!

Are you washed in the blood, In the soul-cleansing blood of the Lamb?
Are your garments spotless?
Are they white as snow?
Are you washed in the blood of the Lamb?
Thanks Keren, another great tip. Now you know why I am happy to 'stick' with your blog…lol… :) Happy crafting, Jenny
Will puzzle saver glue with water work as well as Elmer’s glue with water?
hmm.. Im not sure..sorry!!!
If you’ve tried this on crochets doilies, hearts, etc., does it fill in the lacey holes? I don’t want that.
Thanks!
I saw on another post, if you dry this on waxpaper and turn it frequently while the stiffener is real wet, it will prevent the holes from filling in.
I think if you soak your doilies etc. in this glue & shake them out before put on form to dry the lacey holes should not fill in. I my self have not used this glue with doilies but used corn starch instead. That way if something gets spilled on them you can wash.
Will this work on korker bows?
I dont know, sorry!
Found a link to this on a board on Pinterest and bought a bottle of glue! Can’t wait to try it. Thanks for sharing.
I am wondering if it will wash out? I am looking for something to make casserole servers from fabric that does not wash out?
Would this work with modge podge?
Ii have used modge podge on lace just yesterday and it doesnt stiffen completely hard-but its still kinda bendable, like its not completely dry? (Like taffy) Im wondering if its because im in texas and its like 1000% humidity. When I’ve used modge podge before its not had that problem. As a matter of fact it got hard like it should. So maybe it still needs drying time
I have an old crocheted angel that my aunt made a long time ago. It stands up and is three dimensional. Through the years it has become so soiled. How do I clean it at this point? I am assuming it will have to be re-stiffened but I just don’t know how to get out the stains.
Hi Cindy.. Im sorry but i am not sure what would be best to take the stains out on that… I’m sorry!
Try peroxide or soaking in oxyclean. Then re-stiffen.
My aunt made these along with snowflakes and other items. You can soak the angel in biz and water. It make take several days. Then you would soak it in the glue/water mixture to stiffen. My aunt would stuff the angels head and body with newspaper plastic to form the shape and use pins to stretch out the bottom o. A piece of cardboard with plastic wrap on it until they dried
I know there has been a lot of time since your post, but just in case you still need ideas!

Are u washed in blood, in the soul cleansing blood of a lamb etc
Like what that like holy !!!!
Hi Nina,
Sorry it has taken me a bit to answer you back. Our town was hit hard with the aftermath of hurricane Zeta and have been without power for the last 4 days.
Those are lyrics from a favorite Hymn of mine.
Sorry I don’t understand “like what that like holy!!!!”
If you are asking what it means..
There are certain qualifications the Messiah had to meet to be the Actual Messiah.
Yeshua ( or as most commonly know as Jesus) Fullied every single requirement in being the Messiah..
One of the qualifications was that even though He was 100% human… He Never Sinned and He was called The Lamb of God That takes away the sin of the World.
That is why He was able to be the Complete and Final Sacrifice for you and me and for every human that ever lived or will live.
The One who never Sinned was the Payment for our Sin when he was brutally beaten and murdered.
When we truly believe that He is the Messia…h then God the Father gives us a New Heart and Washes away all of our sin and have Eternal life.
That is why the hymn says… are you washed in the blood of the Lamb.
Xo!
